Almost Coconut Pine Needle Basket

Click/tap on images for enlarged views and descriptions.

Sporting an interior center of radiating V stitches and a body of popcorn stitches, this small coconut-sized lidded basket almost resembles the actual coconut that hung in our sailboat’s galley for years as we cruised throughout the South Pacific—it was the perfect place to keep garlic bulbs handy. The lid has a black resin toggle button for a knob, and radiating ti stitches, solid wraps, and diamond stitches to complement the base design. Glass crow beads and brass tags authenticate the artist and creation year (2022). Made with coiled longleaf (Pinus palustris) pine needles that have been dyed black and treated with glycerin for pliability, and waxed linen thread, this basket is a keeper (so to speak!).

Care & Specs

Pine needle creations are gifts from nature, coiled with bundles of pine needles harvested after they’ve naturally fallen to the ground, and hand stitched with various waxed cords or threads. Many pine needle creations take more than forty hours to craft—truly labors of love that I hope may be enjoyed by others for many years to come. ~NMc

Care Recommendations:

  • Avoid fully immersing in water. Subsequent drying and contraction of water-soaked and swelled needles may loosen stitches.
  • Avoid direct sunlight: it could potentially damage organic materials or unevenly fade dyed elements used in your basket.
  • Gently remove dust with a soft paintbrush, or use a can of compressed air. Lightly wipe baskets with a damp cloth using cold water (without fully immersing in water).
  • Do not place in a microwave oven: metal parts may have been used in construction, and threads are coated with wax—it’s non-toxic, yet, could melt when exposed to heat.
  • Baskets are food safe, but to ensure ease of cleaning and their longevity, it is advisable to keep food separated from basket interiors with a cloth napkin or similar protection.
