Baby Sister Pine Needle Basket

The name of this pine needle basket—Baby Sister—is a reference to two prior baskets that are similar but larger: Mariposa, and Little Sister (see their story in the Portfolio listing). Baby Sister was created with nearly the same pattern and colors, and includes crazy lace crow beads at the five stand-out points which result in a “star” shape at the rim. Coiled with dyed and vegetable glycerin-treated pine needles, and stitched with waxed Brazilian Linhasita thread in two colors, the stitches include ti, solid wrap, Mariposa, and diamond. This basket is a small but elegant vessel for tiny treasures.

Mariposa Lilies Pine Needle Basket

During one particularly stormy March, thoughts of calmer springs turned to making this teneriffe rendition of Mariposa Lilies (Calochortus superbus)—a wildflower that doesn’t actually bloom until late April or May. Native American tribes in this area of California where I live relished the bulbs of this plant for food when, in the early 1900s, it grew in “great tracts” on open hillsides. Fortunately for me, these lovelies bloom right here in our Mariposa, California back yard, in late May. Besides the teneriffe Mariposa Lilies hand-woven on 1.5- to 2-inch brass rings, this basket is made of dyed and natural glycerined longleaf pine needles (Pinus palustris), and stitched with Brazilian waxed Linhasita thread in two colors using solid wrap, simple, and fern stitches. Glass crow beads and the artist’s signature and basket creation year engraved on metal ID tags are attached to one side. This basket won a second place ribbon at the 2023 Mariposa County Fair—its only competition was “Cuppa Tea“ which won first place, also shown in this Shop. It was also accepted into the juried Yosemite Renaissance 40 art exhibit that traveled throughout California’s Central Valley for a year in 2026.

Copper Thunderbird Pine Needle Basket

Copper Thunderbird refers to the center of this basket, which is made of a heavy duty natural clay epoxy color base that is hard and does not bend, and is inlaid with a powerful copper metal clay thunderbird figure. The thunderbird is a well-known figure in Native American mythology throughout the USA and Canada. It symbolizes power, strength, and protection against evil spirits. The center was made by WeBeWeave, who says it takes 72 hours to make them from start to finish. The basket is made of coiled dyed and glycerin-treated longleaf pine needles (Pinus palustris), stitched with three colors of Brazilian waxed Linhasita thread, using the solid wrap, diamond and Carlson Combo (half diamonds plus reverse ti), and simple stitches. Copper beads with the artist’s signature and basket creation year (2025) are attached at one side.

Sierra Spring Gathering Basket
This pine needle Sierra Spring Gathering Basket is made especially for cut flowers, herbs, or light garden harvests. Created with a foundation of long leaf pine needles (Pinus palustris) and stitched with waxed Linhasita thread the basket features four tenerfiffe-woven Sierra wildflower motifs depicting the California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica), Mariposa Lily (Calochortus leichtlinii), Baby Blue Eyes (Calochortus leichtlinii), and Camas Lily (Camassia leichtlinii). The basket handles are reinforced with embedded (and invisible) 18-gauge metal wire for extra holding strength. Stitches include solid wrap, simple, diamond, Carlson Combo (rows of backstitch plus reverse ti), and fern.

New Bee Pine Needle Basket
New Bee (yes, a play on the word “newbie” and a nod to a previous bee basket viewable in this site’s Portfolio), is a small trinket and treasure-holding basket sure to please any dedicated bee aficionado. The center is a teneriffe-woven bee, and the colors throughout the rest of the basket echo the bee’s classic yellow and black. Here’s a handy pine needle basket especially suited for filling with holiday cheer! At almost three inches deep, it can hold anything from bags of candy, cookies, and dinner rolls, to fruit. The colors—red, green, and off-white—are reminiscent of the Christmas season, but they are also the colors of the Mexican flag. Thus, this basket fits right in as a year-round decor item as well. Cuppa Tea?! Pine Needle Basket Table Centerpiece Set

This handmade 5-piece pine needle tea set (teapot with lid, 2 cups, and tray) was made with a dear British friend in mind—he taught us long ago to always query your house guests first thing after the greeting with, “Cuppa tea?” This little reminder makes a unique table centerpiece and conversation starter. The teapot has a removable lid, and although its interior would not hold water, it is ample enough to keep a stash of tea bags—or mini packets of jams & jellies, honey, sugar, etc.—handy. The two teacups also fit inside the teapot. Made of coiled natural longleaf pine needles (Pinus palustris) and stitched with Brazilian waxed Linhasita thread in two colors, a combination of multiple stitches was used, including solid wrap, swirling basic, swirling wheat, reverse ti, popcorn, and fagoting that surrounds the inset walnut slices in the tray. The teapot base and both cups also have walnut slices for centers, and the teapot lid has a large wooden bead for a knob. This set won a first place ribbon at the Mariposa County Fair in 2023. Sold only as a complete set.

Baby Bear Pine Needle Bowl

In the children’s story Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Goldilocks finds the bowl of porridge that is “just right” in the smallest bowl, which is baby bear’s. This pine needle basket, made from coiled natural and dyed black longleaf pine needles (Pinus palustris), is not too big and not too small: it is just right, and thus named after Baby Bear’s bowl. Using waxed Brazilian Linhasita thread in a single color, the basked is stitched with solid wrap, diamond, swirling wheat, and fern stitches, and the bottom center is a sliced walnut. Glass crow beads and the artist’s signature metal ID tags are attached at one side.

Lasercut Butterfly Pine Needle Basket

The Lasercut Butterfly basket is made from coiled natural longleaf pine needles (Pinus palustris) bound with Brazilian waxed Linhasita thread in two hues of blue and black for the main base. It is primarily stitched with the swirling basic stitch, and is embellished at the rim on either side with intertwined solid wrap rows of the two colors, giving a slight “butterfly wings” vibe. Glass crow beads and the artist’s signature metal tags with creation year engraved (2023) are attached at one side. This understated basket would make a lovely utilitarian vessel for bread or fruit, or just about any other treat you’d like to keep handy for the guests or grandkids!

Currents Pine Needle Basket

This “Currents” basket is handmade of longleaf pine needles (Pinus palustris) treated with glycerin for pliabiltiy and longlife, and waxed Brazilian Linhasita thread. The “currents” loops depicted in the front of this basket were formed using a technique more often found in fabric-wrapped coiled rope baskets, but these are all pine needle bundles tightly-wrapped with fine, 1mm thread. Stitches used in this basket include ti stitches for a radiating color gradient center, the simple and swirling wheat for the interior and exterior stitch patterns, and of course, solid wraps for the top five rim rows in various colors of water: indigo, turquoise, light green, and tropical purple (lavender).

Wavelength Pine Needle Vase with Jar
Wavelength—an old favorite Van Morrison song (and album), also refers to the undulating coils of contrasting black pine needles that flow around the exterior of this vase. The vase is made of one continuous coil, from bottom to top, with the drop coils on the surface continuing from coils both at the bottom, and at the top. The coiled foundation consists of long leaf pine needles (Pinus palustris), that have been dyed and/or glycerin-treated for flexability and longevity. Stitched with waxed Brazilian Linhasita thread using the swirling basic stitch throughout, a solid wrap coil is the base center. A 16-oz. wide mouth Ball jar (included!) fits inside for use with plants or bouquets that require water. The vase itself does not hold water, but dried flowers or other decorative items such as feathers work fine without the jar insert. This one-of-a-kind vase would make a lovely addition to any style of home decor.

Infinity Two-Tone Pine Needle Vase with Jar
The Infinity Pine Needle Vase accomodates an included 16-oz. wide mouth jar for use as a flower or small plant holder with water. (The vase does not hold water on its own but of course, could be used for items that don’t require water, such as feathers, drired flower arrangements, etc.). This Seven Sails teneriffe wreath is an abstract wall hanging woven with waxed Brazilian Linhasita thread in a single color on spokes attached to an 8-inch brass ring with the double buttonhole stitch. Longleaf pine needles (Pinus palustris) surround the ring with several coiled rows of diamond, radiating ti, and lazy stitches for a pattern that complements the primary focus of Seven Sails. A teneriffe wreath woven with a butterfly motif, this Butterfly wall hanging celebrates—and brings awareness to—a species that faces a wide range of threats including habitat loss, climate change, disease, pesticides, and invasive plants. Woven on an 8-inch brass ring with spokes attached to the double buttonhole stitch that covers the ring, this piece continues well beyond the ring with coiled natural longleaf pine needles (Pinus palustris), a row of glass beads, and a final row of horn beads that create a “flutter” effect at the rim. Bell Charm Pine Needle Ornament
A small silver bell charm (with a real clapper!) hangs from a double-buttonhole-covered brass ring that is nested among rows of coiled and dyed pine needles. Stitched with the swirling basic stitch in waxed Linhasita thread throughout, with an added loop for hanging from a rearview mirror or a Christmas tree—or anywhere else you’d like to have an otherwise elusive butterfly ever-present. Crystal Teardrop Pine Needle Ornament
A lead free, laser cut, K9 crystal glass teardrop focal pendant hangs from a double-buttonhole covered brass ring in this ornament. Coiled black-dyed long leaf pine needles (Pinus palustris) surround the center ring, and are stitched with reversed ti and diamond stitches in two shades of blue (aqua and a rich royal) that complement the suncatcher crystal teardrop. Enjoy the play of sunlight that this crystal catches! Dimensions: 4.25″ x 4.375″
Honu (Turtle) Pine Needle Ornament
The Honu, or turtle, is a deeply rooted symbol in Polynesian culture, carrying a powerful and multifaceted meaning. Traditionally, the turtle is an emblem of longevity, wisdom, and resilience. Its connection to the sea offers a symbolism related to journey and exploration, not only in the physical world but also spiritually. Honu is a reminder that every journey in life, although it may be long and full of challenges, is guided by an inner force that allows overcoming difficulties with calmness and wisdom.
The turtle pendant in this ornament also has a subtle nod to the “fish hook” (makau or matau) symbol also prevalent throughout Polynesian culture. Worn as a tattoo or jewelry, it is believed to ensure safe travel over water. The pendant in this ornament is nested amongst a simple dreamweaver and surrounded by coiled pine needles using the swirling wheat stitch. Seven copper beads are placed at the solid wrapped rim. Irish Luck Pine Needle Ornament
Here’s a bit o‘ Irish luck to ya in the form of a tiny four leaf clover charm, suspended in a brass ring center covered with a double buttonhole stitch and nested in coiled rows of pine needles. Considered a lucky charm, because there are about 10,000 three-leaf clovers for every lucky four-leaf version and therefore, a rare find. Even so, there are more four-leaf clovers found in Ireland than anywhere else! The leaves of the four-leaf clover are said to be symbols for faith, hope, love, and luck. If you‘re the superstitious type, give your four-leaf clover to someone else—it is said that this will double your good luck! This ornament is made of longleaf pine needles dyed black and stitched with waxed Brazilian Linhasita thread in a pleasant Irish green color, and includes a generous loop for hanging. The ornament is 3.75″/9.5 cm x 4″/10.1 cm in diameter.
Peace Star Pine Needle Ornament
A universal and year-round desire—Peace on Earth—is stamped into a small star-shaped charm which hangs from a larger star that is covered with the double-buttonhole stitch in blue, both of which are suspended from a covered brass ring.
