Madia Cyanotype Pine Needle Basket

This pine needle basket was created using a resin center made by Sierra Sown. The center has a cyanotype print of a Spring Madia (Madia elegans) flower, collected from our property here in Mariposa, CA—the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. An annual wildflower in the sunflower family, the cheerful yellow and red flowers of the Spring Madia attract bees and butterflies, and birds enjoy the seeds after blooming. The basket is made with a foundation of untreated longleaf pine needles (Pinus palustris) and stitched primarily with ti but including solid wraps, swirling wheat, half diamond, and fern stitches in Brazilian waxed Linhasita thread. It’s a perfect place to keep small trinkets, jewelry, and other tiny treasures handy.

Mariposa Lilies Pine Needle Basket by Nancy McKeown

Mariposa Lilies Pine Needle Basket

Click/tap on images for enlarged views and descriptions.

During one particularly stormy March, thoughts of calmer springs turned to making this teneriffe rendition of Mariposa Lilies (Calochortus superbus)—a wildflower that doesn’t actually bloom until late April or May. Native American tribes in this area of California where I live relished the bulbs of this plant for food when, in the early 1900s, it grew in “great tracts” on open hillsides. Fortunately for me, these lovelies bloom right here in our Mariposa, California back yard, in late May. Besides the teneriffe Mariposa Lilies hand-woven on 1.5- to 2-inch brass rings, this basket is made of dyed and natural glycerined longleaf pine needles (Pinus palustris), and stitched with Brazilian waxed Linhasita thread in two colors using solid wrap, simple, and fern stitches. Glass crow beads and the artist’s signature and basket creation year engraved on metal ID tags are attached to one side. This basket won a second place ribbon at the 2023 Mariposa County Fair—its only competition was “Cuppa Tea“ which won first place, also shown in this Shop.

This basket comes with a metal display stand.

Sporting an interior center of radiating V stitches and a body of popcorn stitches, this small coconut-sized lidded basket almost resembles the actual coconut that hung in our sailboat’s galley for years as we cruised throughout the South Pacific—it was the perfect place to keep garlic bulbs handy. The lid has a black resin toggle button for a knob, and radiating ti stitches, solid wraps, and diamond stitches to complement the base design. Glass crow beads and brass tags authenticate the artist and creation year (2022). Made with coiled longleaf (Pinus palustris) pine needles that have been dyed black and treated with glycerin for pliability, and waxed linen thread, this basket is a keeper (so to speak!).

Cuppa Tea?! Pine Needle Basket Table Centerpiece Set

Click/tap on images for enlarged views and descriptions.

This handmade 5-piece pine needle tea set (teapot with lid, 2 cups, and tray) was made with a dear British friend in mind—he taught us long ago to always query your house guests first thing after the greeting with, “Cuppa tea?” This little reminder makes a unique table centerpiece and conversation starter. The teapot has a removable lid, and although its interior would not hold water, it is ample enough to keep a stash of tea bags handy. The two teacups also fit inside the teapot. Made of coiled natural longleaf pine needles (Pinus palustris) and stitched with Brazilian waxed Linhasita thread in two colors, a combination of multiple stitches was used, including solid wrap, swirling basic, swirling wheat, reverse ti, popcorn, and fagoting that surrounds the inset walnut slices in the tray. The teapot base and both cups also have walnut slices for centers, and the teapot lid has a large wooden bead for a knob. This set won a first place ribbon at the Mariposa County Fair in 2023. Sold only as a complete set.

Teapot, 5.5″/14 cm high x 7″/18 cm diameter
Tray, 10″x13″/25.4 x 33 cm x 1.5″/3.8 cm deep

Á la Plage! Pine Needle Basket by Nancy McKeown

Á la Plage! (To the Beach!) Pine Needle Basket

Click/tap on images for enlarged views and descriptions.

Á la Plage! (To the Beach!) was named for a funny event at the French immersion school in France I once attended. Our Czech classmate was tasked with announcing—in French only (a non-native language for us all)—the afternoon activities for each of the other classes at our mandatory all-school lunch, from beginning to advanced levels (we were intermediate), full of many international and ambassador-type folks. He sent each class to their proper educational location, like, the rather boring language lab, etc., but—he saved our class for last, saying, “intermédiaire: á la plage!” Hilarity ensued once everyone realized that only HIS class was going “to the beach!” I couldn’t help being reminded of that story with this resin center, containing a tiny beach scene made by DistinctiveU. The basket is made of natural, glycerin-treated longleaf pine needles (Pinus palustris), and stitched with Brazilian Linhasita thread in two colors, using solid wrap, diamond, and simple stitches. Complementary glass crazy lace beads are inset along the rim, creating an octagon shape there.

In the children’s story Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Goldilocks finds the bowl of porridge that is “just right” in the smallest bowl, which is baby bear’s. This pine needle basket, made from coiled natural and dyed black longleaf pine needles (Pinus palustris), is not too big and not too small: it is just right, and thus named after Baby Bear’s bowl. Using waxed Brazilian Linhasita thread in a single color, the basked is stitched with solid wrap, diamond, swirling wheat, and fern stitches, and the bottom center is a sliced walnut. Glass crow beads and the artist’s signature metal ID tags are attached at one side.

This is a small lidded basket with a teneriffe-woven butterfly motif for the center of its lid. The lid fits inside of the top rim of the basket base, creating a flat top appearance to further enhance focus on the butterfly element. Made of coiled natural longleaf pine needles (Pinus palustris) and stitched with three shades of blue waxed Brazilian Linhasita thread. Radiating ti stitches in the lid create a gradient effect, and the base consists of solid wraps, simple, diamond, and reverse ti stitches—the combination of which is named the Carlson Combo. The teneriffe butterfly weaving is created on a 2-inch metal ring covered with the double buttonhole stitch.

The Purple Swirl basket was made with completely solid-wrapped coils of longleaf (Pinus palustris) pine needles, and was inspired by some of the small basket coiling kits sold by Judy K. Wilson. My sole intention was to teach myself how to create the double swirl pattern—using my favorite colors, of course! The lighter lavender thread contrasts with the rest of the darker purple thread used throughout the basket, and with the matching inset glass crow beads, creates the striking swirl effect. Two colors of Brazilian waxed Linhasita thread were used throughout.

Salsa! A fun piece, with dancing lampwork chile pepper beads that never stop moving. Thus, its name refers to either the food or the dance… I couldn’t decide (but due to all the movement, I’m leaning towards “dance!”). Resin center made by Kali McKeown, embedded with the same lampwork chile pepper beads, and complemented by the radiating ti stitching with four colors of Linhasita waxed Brazilian thread that creates a gradient color effect. Created at the request of a friend as a surprise for his wife, this basket grew too big too fast for its intended purpose, and so, it was back to the drawing board for me to make something else for them that was closer to the original vision. Water Whirl is made of coiled longleaf pine needles (Pinus palustris) bound with a simple stitch and solid wrapped with Linhasita waxed thread in three colors (two blues and a light gray), with crow beads and metal ID tags. I’ve always loved swirls and organic shapes that still appear to be somewhat symmetrical. This basket was very time consuming, requiring a lot of wrapping and thread color changes. An interesting surprise was the “wave” it created all by itself at its top rim due to the way the wrapped sections stacked up. Although I had envisioned a round basket, it took on an oval shape in the end, so, I went with it and let it flow, so to speak.

This “Currents” basket is handmade of longleaf pine needles (Pinus palustris) treated with glycerin for pliabiltiy and longlife, and waxed Brazilian Linhasita thread. Stitches used in this basket include ti stitches for a radiating color gradient center, the simple and swirling wheat for the interior and exterior stitch patterns, and of course, solid wraps for the top five rim rows in various colors of water: indigo, turquoise, light green, and tropical purple (lavender).
