Notes on Mariposa Lilies:
Here’s my attempt to channel a bit of spring during some epic stormy weather here, with a teneriffe rendition of Mariposa Lilies (Calochortus superbus), which doesn’t actually flower until late April or May. Native American tribes in this area of California where I live relished the bulbs of this plant for food when, in the early 1900s, it grew in “great tracts” on open hillsides.
