Notes on Mariposa Lilies:

Here’s my attempt to channel a bit of spring during some epic stormy weather here, with a teneriffe rendition of Mariposa Lilies (Calochortus superbus), which don’t actually flower until late April or May. Native American tribes in this area of California where I live relished the bulbs of this plant for food when, in the early 1900s, it grew in “great tracts” on open hillsides. Fortunately for me, these lovelies bloom right here in our Mariposa, CA back yard—in late May.
